Buzzard 2nd XV took the short journey along the A5 to take on local rivals Milton Keynes, and were hoping to rack up the first league win of 2010.
During the warm up it was clear to see that the squad were in a focussed mood and determined to return to winning ways. The intensity of the warm up was very high and this boded well for the game.
The game started well for Buzz as they exploded from the first whistle and hit the game running. They were rewarded with a penalty inside the opponents 22 with in the first few minutes that glance the post but unfortunately on the wrong side. Buzz didn’t have to wait too long for another scoring chance when after two quick rucks by the forwards, the ball was shipped wide by the backs and Jon Ilic ‘fridged’ the full back to score in the corner, the conversion was missed. 5 – 0.
A second try soon followed when Captain Craig Walker intercepted a pass from 9 to 10 at a line out on MK’s 10m line and ran for the line, reaching it just before the cover defence. This time the extras were duely added by Ilic, 0 – 12.
The score board continued to tick over as Ilic added a penalty just before half time. 0 – 15 HT.
The second half started with a shift in power as the home team came out fighting and after a sustained period of pressure within the Buzz 22 they were duely rewarded with a try after a catch and drive from a line out. 7 – 15.
A second, near identical try soon followed and the game was suddenly in the balance and there for who ever wanted it more. 12 – 15.
The second try from the home team seemed to suddenly awake Buzz from there slumber and returned to playing the rugby that paid such dividends in the first half and were rewarded with 2 further tries. One went to Jake Wheeler who sold the guards and defenders at a ruck a dummy to crashed over from 5 yards out, the second went to Walker who crossed the line for his second of the afternoon after several tight pick and drives from the forwards. Ilic added 1 conversion. Full time 12 – 27.
It was a well deserved win for Buzz and one that could easily have been higher if played on a wider pitch that would have allowed the backs to use their pace and if the playing service resembled a pitch, rather than a bog come beach.
The forwards manned up and really rucked and scrummaged well as well as being very mobile around the park. The backs defended one on one all game long and in attack showed the dangerous decisive side that has been lurking all season long.
The positives were clear for all to see, but unfortunately so was the negative in the form of returning prop, Russell Cohen, being forced to leave the field with a wrist injury, thankfully the knee problem that has plagued him so far this season was nowhere to be seen and looks to have settled it self.
Despite this win, Buzz cannot afford to sit back on our laurels as next week see’s a difficult, but winnable, fixture away at Kettering. |
