Ladies Rugby

Woman’s Rugby Kicks Off This Summer

It is all happening this summer for women’s rugby. England is hosting the Women’s Rugby World Cup which will see England up against the likes of Ireland, Kazakhstan and the USA in the first pool. A little closer to home though Leighton Buzzards very own women’s rugby team - Leighton Buzzard Ladies, has something to shout about. After a few quiet seasons out of the official Womens Rugby Football Union (WRFU) league, the ladies team are now back in the WRFU Eastern 3 league. The 2010/2011 season sees the return of some old players and the debut of several new players but as always the team is keen to attract the interest of players that are both new to the sport and the club.

The ladies team was formed in 1996, the last 14 years has seen varying success and attracted players from various different backgrounds and levels of experience.  In 1999 the team attended a presentation at Twickenham where they were awarded for their dramatic league promotion. In 2007 and 2008 the club hosted the Women’s National 7’s which saw teams such as Saracens and Wasps battle it out at the club grounds, Wrights Meadow. After many of its players went off to university the team reduced in size and resulted in the team having to drop out of the league for the 2006 season.  The team is proud to have players from 18 years old up. Some of the ladies have played since the team formed and others played their first game just last season and there are a few that are looking forward to making their debut this season.

Jo Newton, 2003-2008 captain started training with the team in 1996, 4 years before she was old enough to play in a fixture. Jo says I love rugby today just as much as I did when I first stepped on the pitch. I have met some great friends and have some fantastic memories and some very proud achievements”. One of the teams newer players Jo Flynn, moved to Leighton Buzzard and wanted to meet new people, having done a Google search for women’s sports teams in here area and having never played the game before she  braved her first training session last summer and hasn’t looked back since At my first training session I didn’t have a clue what was going on, there were balls going everywhere and lots of rugby terms I didn’t understand. I spoke to one of my team mates and was relieved to find out this was completely the norm Flynn continues I played my first game last season and this helped build my confidence and I am really excited about the forthcoming season- we have some great fixtures and socials arranged.

The team’s fixtures will see the team play as close to home as Bletchley and as far afield as Norfolk. Their first league fixture is the 10th October at home against Fakenham ladies. A full list of fixtures can be found on www.buzzardrugby.co.uk

The team train at 7pm on Wednesdays at Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club, Stanbridge Road. All ages, fitness and experience levels are welcome.
If you are interested in joining a sports team in your area, love rugby or think you might, or perhaps just want to make some new friends; this might be the thing for you. No experience need, Leighton Buzzard Ladies just asks you to come along and be prepared to meet new people and enjoy yourself!

Ladies in the League

Buzzard Ladies enter the  league

After a few quiet seasons of friendly fixtures, the Leighton Buzzard ladies rugby team are entering the eastern 3 league for the 2010/11 season.

Due the teams hard work and recruitment efforts, they have managed to muster up enough interest and players to enable league entry.

This is great news for the team members and also the club as it will mean regular games for the ladies, keeping the momentum going throughout the whole season and a chance to show our faces more around the club.

We are always looking for more players, all ages and sizes welcome! If you are interested in joining a team sport in your area or just want to make new friends, come along and give it a go. No experience needed, just be prepared to meet new people and enjoy yourself!

This nine day adventure will involve five days of trekking
across hilly and difficult terrain, covering approximately
80km in total. Although walking distances are not great,
due to the steep ground and many steps, expect to
spend approximately six to eight hours a day scaling this
majestic structure.

Whilst most visitors see only brief glimpses of restored
sections of the Wall near to Beijing, the  trek will explore
sections of the Wall that are among the most impressive
and are rarely seen by westerners.

The final day will be a free day allowing walkers  to explore
China’s second largest city Beijing.

Day 1 Uk – Beijing
The journey of exploration to the far east begins.

Day 2 Beijing – Gubeikou – Transfer 2 hrs
Gubeikou is a tranquil area and an ideal environment away from the
hectic capital city Bejing for a full brief.

Day 3 Gubeikou – Tao Chun – Transfer 40min,
trek 16km
The trek begins with an ascent to the Wall which has yet to be
restored. We follow a path with fabulous views which takes us
through small rural villages towards the Tao Chun valley.

Day 4 Tao Chun – Simatai – Trek 18km
Rejoining the Wall on this strenuous day will see beautiful restored
sections, and amazing views. 18km of ups and downs.

Day 5 Simatai – Ganfang – Trek 14km
After crossing over a suspension bridge and walking a steep section
of path we are rewarded with spectacular views and lunch at the
12th Tower. We then drop down into a wooded area, eventually
emerging into a valley where we follow the stepped crop system
down into the village of Gangfang.

Day 6 Ganfang – Lingxiu – Garden Hotel – Trek 17km
We make our way back to the Wall, and find viewpoints that are
second to none. Linguix awaits the team and the resevoir provides
comfort and rest.

Day 7 Lingxiu – Xinchen – Beijing
– Trek 15km, transfer 3hrs
Our last day of trekking takes us through forests with stunning views
of towers on the Wall. A final descent brings us to our finishing
point, where we board our coaches for the journey back to Beijing
and celebrate our achievements over dinner.

Day 8 – Free Day In Beijing
Your own time to sample the many attractions of Beijing.
D

ay 9 Beijing – Uk
Westward bound we take home memories that will stay forever.
