Leighton Buzzard were in action on Friday before the World cup Final on Saturday morning. Playing at Stockwood Park under lights in the quarter finals of the Bedfordshire Cup Leighton went into the game favourites playing one league higher than Stockwood. The match brought back memories of many league and cup games between the two sides.
The weather made conditions difficult for both teams who were determined to try and run and pass the ball despite the wind and rain. Stockwood were first on the board from a penalty in front of the posts after 7 minutes. Leighton soon came back at the hosts with a charging run from Tom Byard to score just wide of the posts. Conversion by returning number 10 Lee walker made it 3-7. This was followed a few minutes later when Irwin, playing out on the wing squeezed past the Stockwood fullback, who had a great game, to score in the corner. The missed conversion from out wide was understandable in the conditions.
The last play of the first half resulted in another try when Leighton forwards kept the ball tight and allowed Jacob Murtagh to go over to make it 3-17 at half time.
Stockwood were playing good continuity in the second half but a storming run from Andy Mason put him on the scoresheet on his return to first team rugby after a long break. Again Walker added the extras. 3 – 24 and Leighton were in control of the match.
Arran Perry broke down the left wing and was unlucky to be stopped short of the line by the home team full back, however the referee adjudged a misdemeanour in the resulting ruck and so Irwin took a quick tap to dive over the line and extend the lead. Full back Wiggins made the score 3 31 with 18 minutes of the second half gone. Leighton played good supporting rugby but were unable to cross the whitewash despite some good attacks. It was left to the home side to manage a score on the corner at the end of the game to make the final score 10 – 31.
Leighton progress to the next round when they play Ampthill Amateurs in January. Next week Leighton make the journey up to Leicester Forest in a top of the table clash in the league
