2nd xv Match Reports 2018 - 2019

2nd xv v Mens own 9th February 2019

Buzzards 2nds 41 – 7 Mens Own
It was a numbers game on Saturday when the 12 mighty Leighton players took on the hordes from Mens Own (15) at a soggy Wright’s Meadow.  Billy Nash captained the side, the first senior game for Ellis Bisgrove and too many games to mention for the over 60, evergreen Mounteney.  Leighton elected to play up the slope in the first half and they quickly overcame the 2 man advantage with 3 tries by Keir Wheeler, Sam Connolly and Ellis Bisgrove, courtesy of good ball from the scrum and break down.
Alastair Hall, the back row for Leighton, covered the ground at a pace that belies his years and Ben Dumpleton and Keir Wheeler were outstanding in the loose.  Despite Keir and Sam Connolly, trying to continue to play with injuries, they had to leave the field.  At half time, the Beaumont cavalry arrived, Jean Claude joined the forwards and Sam the backs.
Tom Major came on for Sam, once a large enough pair of shorts had been sourced.  Leighton came under increasing pressure in second half and despite, for a short period only have 11 players to MO’s 15, scored 3 tries by Jack Green, Bisgrove, Alistair Hall, and Sam Beaumont MO’s 1.   Jack Green and Ellis Bisgrove both returning to rugby at Leighton Buzzard, were the stand out players in the backs, both in attack and defence and no doubt will play at a higher level in the future.
Sam Connolly and Tom Major are new to the cub joining on Saturday morning, a huge welcome from all at the club.
Some will argue that it’s not the final number that matters, but it would be rude not to report the winning score of 41-7.
