Leighton Buzzard 3rd XV – 47
Ampthill 5th XV – 38
This was a good an enjoyable game of rugby with clear periods of dominance by both teams. The initial advantage went to Leighton Buzzard who had Ampthill on the back foot for the first 10 minutes but then let Ampthill score two breakaway tries to go 12-10 down after 15 minutes. However rather than let Ampthill dominate them, Leighton re-grouped and after a period of to and fro between both teams before Leighton picked up a dropped ball by Ampthill and after some slick handling by the backs Leighton scored under the posts. Following the restart LB put Ampthill under further pressure both with their forwards and their running backs. This resulted in four further tries for LB to turn round 40-12 up.
With the restart it became evident that Ampthill had tightened their game and although there was a trading of tries to take the score to 47-19, the Ampthill pack spent much of this half giving Leighton’s younger pack a lesson in how to apply pressure and play tight controlled rugby. Despite committed defence Ampthill’s greater experience and control brought them 3 further tries to take the final score to 47-38. There was much to be please about in Leighton’s performance with some powerful running by both Robert’s and Forsythe, committed defence by everyone and Pendleton showing how much he has improved since the start of the year. Janes and Roberts both got a brace of tries with Forsythe, Fisk and Stacey scoring a try a piece.
A thank you should be given to Ampthill for agreeing to the change in venue to Leighton Buzzard and we look forward to the return fixture.
