Academy Match Reports 2017-18

Academy v Epping and Upper Clacton RFC 29th April 2018

The Buzzard Academy combined with players from St Ives on the visit to Epping & Upper Clacton RFC. From the off, Epping applied pressure to the Buzzard defence. After a sustained period they managed to break through from a quick penalty. Buzzard forwards, Hayden, Julian and Todd in the front row, Max and George in the 2nd row supported by Archie, Ben and Jack held their own against the much heavier Epping pack. George jumped well to disrupt the lineouts. George P at scrum half linked well with Joseph (captain) and when the backs, Rhys, L.J., Finn, Dane, Matthew and Max, started moving the ball they made some penetrating runs through the Epping defence. Matthew scored, a result of excellent passing from the breakdown between forwards and backs that created the gap on the wing. However from a scrum awarded from the kick off, Epping found a gap in back line to score 12-7 and continued to apply the pressure to go in 19-7 at half-time.

Buzzards came out fighting though and through moving the ball enabled Dane to cut inside, finding the important gap to touchdown. LJ had a cracking game and was very unfortunate to have his try ruled out due to a double movement. Only a well organised defence by Epping prevented further scores and they managed to break away to score again. Although the final score was  Epping 31 – Buzzards 14, it was important to get game time ahead of next week’s fixture against Aylesbury.
