Minis match report 2018-2019

Buzzards @Saints 27th October 2018

Young Buzzards enjoy a taste of the rugby Premiership

It’s been a week to remember for many of the young players of Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club thanks to local Gallagher rugby premiership side Northampton Saints. The Buzzards Minis section has seven age groups with players represented from age 5 to 12 who play at Wright’s Meadow on Stanbridge Road each Sunday morning. The club were chosen by Northampton Saints to be ‘Club of the Match’ for Saturday’s Premiership Cup fixture against Bristol Bears.

As part of the arrangement the Buzzards players were treated to a coaching session by the Rugby Development team from Saints last Wednesday evening who put all the age groups through their paces under the floodlights. The Buzzards players also enjoyed a visit by some of the Saints players including England international Paul Hill and England Under-20 player Toby Trinder. The Saints players were involved in some of the coaching sessions before being asked questions by the boys and girls from Buzzards.

Being selected as ‘Club of the Match’ meant that on Saturday at Franklins Gardens not only did the Buzzards feature in the match day programme, but 30 players from across the age groups acted as Guard of Honour as the teams from Northampton Saints and Bristol Bears took to the pitch in front of a crowd of nearly 10,000 supporters. Prior to kick-off a number of the players got the chance to meet with Saints and South Africa player Heinrich Brüssow in the Fan Village and ask him questions about his professional career. Brothers Aidan and Finlay Rodger, who play for Buzzards U10s and U12s respectively, asked Heinrich about his toughest opponents and career as an international rugby player.

Commenting for Buzzards, Mini’s Chairman Kevin Street said, “This has been a fantastic few days for the boys and girls at Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club. They love being part of this club which has grown once again this season, to have had the opportunity to meet with some of the players at such a high-profile club such as Saints has been something many of them won’t forget. The Club is very much part of the local community and we’d love to welcome new players from any age group to come and try rugby whether they have already played at school or would like to try it for the first time”.
