Leighton Buzzard Colts travelled to Luton RFC to play a friendly match at Newlands Road. A special thanks to the teams sponsors this season – Phoenix Integrated Security, Kerrie’s cleaning & housekeeping and Future Signs .

Following an impeccably observed minutes silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, the young Buzzard’s were keen to get started, with 4 x 15 minute quarters arranged, to give all boys in a squad of 24 game time.

The first quarter was a case of both sides getting into their stride and whilst defending stoutly, Luton managed to break the deadlock with a well worked try to take the lead 5-0.

The second quarter was a different story, with the Buzzard’s on the front foot, with Harley Bisgrove touching down, following a well worked move through hands.

The third quarter saw the Buzzard’s in the ascendancy again and following a period of sustained pressure, George DeVoogt dotted down. Despite being under pressure, some strong running by Luton meant they themselves scored a good try to bring the scores level.

With one quarter left to play and the scores level, it was once again the Buzzard’s who looked the more likely to score and were camped in the Luton half. Credit should be given to Luton for not conceding under huge pressure. Following a breakaway, Luton managed to score the winning score right on the final whistle for a 17-10 victory. Full credit to both teams for some excellent rugby at the beginning of the season and a great run out for all players available today.

Luton awarded Tom Maynard man of the match for his hard work from the back row.

The colts coaching team were pleased with the effort and whilst there are things to work on, can see great promise in the squad.
