Wellingborough Old Grammarians 33 – 19 Buzzards
Buzzards travelled to Wellingborough seeking to build on their fine performance in their last match. However Buzzards started poorly and Wellingborough took immediate advantage scoring 3 times in the first 10 minutes with the visitors unable to tackle. However, despite Buzzards having looked shell shocked ,they started to contest and play a bit more aggressively. Rhys Richards stopped two attacks with some desperate tackling and turned possession over allowing George Pratt to collect the loose ball and charge deep into the oppositions 22. The ensuing ruck was quickly cleared and Sam Beaumont charged round the blind side and scored the Buzzard’s first points. George Vincent returning to Buzzards showed some determined running and created the space for Joe Cox to kick the ball deep. Dane Richards showed his explosive pace and out-raced the cover defensive to kick the ball over the try line but was beaten by the bounce. However the ball was gratefully pounced on by Joe Cox following close behind and another try was added to Buzzard’s score line. So despite a dreadful start Buzzards were back in the match. The points gap closed further when another excellent kick and chase by Beaumont pinned Wellingborough back on their own try line. The home team failed to clear their line and the loose ball was pounced on by scrum half Jack Brooks. Wellingborough now looking shell shocked themselves piled the pressure back on Buzzards and a desperate tackle by the outstanding Julian Gaillee saved a sure try.
The second half saw Buzzards pile on the pressure for the equalising score and big Max Green , after a great charge , was held up over the line. For 15 minutes Buzzards attacked but Wellingborough defended well and Buzzards could not capitalise on their period of pressure and territory. The final score of the game was a breakaway try for Wellingborough who were relieved to escape with a 31 19 win. If only we could start well!!
