Sunday saw Leighton Buzzard U13s brave the fuel queues to make the long journey to (just beyond) Hertford for our first game since March 2020. With 5 players making their debuts (and more than half of those playing their first ever contact rugby matches), the first few minutes saw players trying to find their feet. After going behind early, the Buzzards responded well and attacked well against a determined and physically powerful Hertford side.
Some determined tackling and aggressive running saw the tie swing in our favour as the young Buzzard team started to cause real problems for their opponents and pressure them into conceding penalties both in the ruck and open play. It was pleasing for the coaches to see (and hear) how well the players communicated with each other on the pitch. The improvement in kicking was notable, with the boys beginning to show a greater understanding of when and where to kick, culminating in a fantastically-timed and weighted kick from Evan and an equally fine run from Vaughan for a great try.
The boys left happy after a good morning’s rugby (and bonding over the post-match food). Perhaps some more things to work on at training over the next couple of weeks, but a very positive start to the season.
Tries: Jack (2), Eli, Oscar, Vaughan, Leo & Ethan. The coaches couldn’t player of the week this week – everyone raised their game.
A great first experience in Junior rugby as our boys acquitted themselves well and everyone headed home pleased with a great match. Thank you once again to parents for their support (and chauffeuring).
