The U13s travelled to Ampthill RFC for the first of their back-to-back finals.
The match kicked off and quickly it was apparent the Ampthill were going to be formidable opponents.
They soon scored the first of their tries. As they scored it became clear that there were 16 players on the field in the Burgundy shirts of the opposition. This was rectified but had proven to unsettle the otherwise strong Buzzard squad.
Several scores were soon rattled in despite some strong tackling from all over the park lead by the Buzzards skipper, Tom and his able lieutenants Luca, Dylan and Spencer.
The early nerves settled and Buzzards finally grew into the game with some strong running and commitment around the contact area. Jack found his rhythm around the Base of the scrums and rucks and was able to unleash the backs who ran hard and fast throughout the match.
The early scores had put Ampthill beyond reach but, showing grit, determination and a spirit beyond their years Buzzards played until the final whistle leaving nothing on the field. The last try of the game, and the best in terms of handling and skill came at the end and was scored by Ellis. This typified the way the boys approached the game and made the travelling supporters and coaches immensely proud.
Next week, the boys have Kettering in the East Midlands Plate Final. Let’s hope the same spirit is evident then.
