Under 14s v Luton 10th April 2016

Buzzards hosted Luton RFC in very good playing conditions at Wrights Meadow. Forced to play 12-a-side due to Buzzard injuries, they made their customary slow start and Luton quickly scored 2 tries through their quick backs, and later another. Buzzards got their act together, led by captain Ethan, and soon the forwards, Hayden, Padraig, Max G, Angus and Luke, were competing robustly in the rucks and mauls. Julian at scrum half proved a nuisance to Luton and disrupted play at key moments. From a lineout, George stole the ball and powered down the left wing. As he was tackled, he made a smart offload to Ethan where, with his strength and pace, he found the gap to score. With Ethan, the backs, Albert, Joey, Ollie, George and Lewis, picked up the pace with their defensive tackling and were making penetrating runs through and around the Luton line. Albert made a breakthrough and he managed to ofload the the ball to Luke who touched down for an excellent try. Albert had a great kicking day in the breezy conditions and landed the conversion. At halftime the score was 14 – 15.

Most of the 2nd half was spent with Buzzards under pressure from Luton. Despite spirited tackling, Luton scored 2 quick tries. Buzzards’ runs tended to peter out due to a lack of support. However the game ended with a flourish when Ollie made a flanking run down the right but this time with surprising support from prop Max to whom he popped the ball; Max used his strength to power through 3 defenders to score a well deserved try. For his improved performance in defence and attack, Max was made Man of the Match. Final score was 19 – 25, which epitomised the close game.
