The Buzzard U14 squad welcomed Northampton Men’s Own to Wright’s Meadow with a quick try in the opening minutes by the captain Ethan. From a scrum, Ethan steamed through a gap in the defensive line to touch down. Men’s Own, rudely awakened, reacted very quickly from a penalty to score in the corner despite a valiant tackle by Lewis. In their stride, Men’s Own scored another 2 tries, in despite of spirited tackling by Ethan, Angus, Charlie and George K, the no. 8, who also made an impressive run down the line was unlucky not to score. With few exceptions, the Buzzard scrum were generally lethargic and slow to commit in the rucks. From another scrum, the ball went through the hands of the backs to Rhys who outflanked the defence to score. At 12 – 17, the game remained close at half time.
Men’s Own were quicker out of the blocks in the second half with a clever kick to the corner being touched down. However, after a line-out Ethan showed his pace to reduce the deficit. There were notable flashes of good play from Max P, Julian, Hayden, Joey, Max G, Rhys and Dane which Buzzards were unable to build on. Men’ Own started to pull away but Ethan completed his hat-trick, building on a break-out from Albert as Buzzards were put under pressure in their 22.
Lewis had an exceptional game as full back but Man of the Match went to Ethan.
