Under 14s v MK 3rd January 2016

Under 14’s v Milton Keynes

The Buzzard U14 were almost back to a full squad on the visit to Milton Keynes RFC following recent injuries and were in good spirits.

Buzzards started well and managed to contain MK on a heavy pitch. Inside centre Ethan (captain) led by example in the tackling, together with George (no.8), the 2 flankers Eddy and Lewis, and backs Albert and Ollie. Angus (lock) managed the threat from his opposite number very well and Julian at scrum-half was a nuisance to the opposition. The scrums were solid, with the makeshift front row of Hayden, Craig and Adam winning good ball. MK scored first when their fast wing outflanked the Buzzard backs. But Buzzards fought back.

A weak MK clearing kick was collected by Ollie who made a good run across the field before passing to Ethan who outran the MK defence to score. Albert converted and generally kicked well in the crosswind. For the remainder of the first half Buzzards remained camped in the MK half but a combination of poor rucking and failure to pass the ball out wide meant Buzzards could not penetrate the spirited MK line

. A neat kick and run move by Ethan to the MK 5m line nearly resulted in another try, but even with swift support Buzzards could not capitalise.

In the 2nd half, Buzzards started to dominate the lineout due to Angus and Luke moving to the front of the line and Craig, as hooker, being alert to the loose ball and making some very good forward runs. It was from a lineout that Buzzards scored the 2nd try, with Lewis picking up and passing to Ollie whose pace on the right wing could not be matched by MK. Buzzards were noticeably tiring and were unable to match the MK rucking, resulting in 2 tries being conceded.

Final score Milton Keynes 17 – Buzzards 12.

Joint man of the match was given to Angus and Craig for their hard work, tackling and penetrating runs.
