Under 18 v Henley 14th January 2018

After a lengthy enforced Christmas break, Buzzards Colts were finally in action against visitors from Henley in an U18 League match. Led out by captain Reece Payne, Buzzards were soon put to the test by a well-drilled Henley squad. Buzzards defence held, despite a squad comprising a majority of U17s and the 3 U16s forwards, Hayden Jones, Max Green and Julian Gallie, being particularly active, but was soon put under more pressure when Todd Carmichael received a yellow card for a high, last ditch, tackle. Henley used the extra man to stretch the Buzzard back line and find the gaps, soon scoring 2 converted tries. Back to a full team, Henley continued to apply the pressure. Some poor tackling and positional play led to a further 2 tries by the visitors. Buzzard excursions into the opposition 22 were very promising, by Louis Beer, Sam Beaumont, Ollie Gronert and John Fudge, but these ended with spilt ball or ruck turnovers indicative of the lack of competitive game time.

The second half continued with Henley scoring due to some nervous defending close to the try line. A red card for Carmichael however fired up the Buzzard squad and in the final 25 minutes there was sustained pressure in the Henley 22, with consecutive penalties. George Pratt kept the ball moving.  From a quick tap, the ball went through to Beer who showed his strength to drive over the line and score. He also added the extra 2 points with a difficult conversion. Despite the loss, 7 – 47, there were many positives by all the players and an increase in game time will soon see the Buzzard Colts back to winning ways.

Notable performances by James Tingey, LJ Green, Harry Charter, George Burr, Reece and Dane Richards, with Players of the Day being John Fudge and Hayden Jones for their exceptional efforts.  Buzzard Colts train every Tuesday evening at Wright Meadow, Stanbridge road, joining the 1st/2nd teams on Thursday evening.
