On the morning of Sunday 29 October 2017, the Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club Under Nines hosted the Biggleswade Rugby Club Under Nines at home at the Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club grounds at Wright’s Meadow.
Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club fielded a healthy three teams, and Biggleswade Rugby Club fielded one team. The morning proceeded as a miniature round-robin tournament, with every team playing every other team in succession.
Due to having a younger player in a different age group, this reporter only saw two halfs of two separate U9 games. In the first, one of the Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club teams made a strong showing against the Biggleswade Rugby Club team. There were some superb tries from both teams, with the speedsters on both sides standing out when they were put into space. There was also some resolute tackling which was good to see, considering this is the first season in which the players have had to tackle.
In the second game, the same Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club team looked to be feeling the effects of a morning’s rugby, and struggled to find their fine earlier form in a match against one of the other Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club teams. More tries to the speedsters, and a successful attempt to break the defensive line by running onto the ball at pace from the restart were the standout features of this half.
Players of The Day trophies for the three Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club teams were awarded to Callum, Edward, and Daniel.
The matches were followed by hotdogs in the clubhouse as is customary and always hugely popular.
Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club Under Nines are in action at home again next Sunday hosting Milton Keynes Rugby Club.
