Leighton Buzzard RFC’s under 9’s travelled for an early 9.15 start to Hitchin RFC on Sunday 15th October to play their second fixture of the season. After a mammoth walk to the pitches, the under 9’s spilt into three teams to face four teams fielded by Hitchin.
Play started with some shaky defence by both Leighton and Hitchin, with a couple of early try’s scored by both sides. As the minutes passed the defence improved and some excellent tackles were made as the game progressed. As this is the first season the under 9’s have started tackling, the progress they have made in the last 6 weeks has been great to see with all the players getting stuck in.
The first 10 minute games finished and teams moved around for the second and third games happening quite fast. Again good ball handling skills and passing by Leighton assisted in further try’s with a couple of good tackles close to the try line denying Hitchin further try’s. Several Leighton players took some hits and came off for a breather, cuddle with mum and dad, but as a testament to their determination they all came back on not long after.
The fourth game followed a similar format to the previous two games with clear periods of good defence and tackling with runs, followed by more try’s. Special praise must go to Daniel, Evan & Josh who were selected from their respective teams as player of the match and awarded a trophy each at the end of play.
