LEIGHTON BUZZARD RFC GRANTED YOUTH PROMISE FUNDING

Leighton Buzzard RFC are delighted to announce they have been awarded a £20,000 investment in their Junior Academy by Leighton-Linslade Town Council (LLTC).

The Youth Promise grant scheme run by LLTC aims to help existing organisations in the Parish of Leighton-Linslade expand the capacity of their work to the benefit of children and young people aged 11 to 19.

The programme of activity will see a much-needed investment in our Junior Academy which incorporates our Under 13s, Under 14s, Under 15s and Under 16s.

Through using the core values of rugby union and our own club ethos, we will provide a key focus on building each young person’s confidence, competence, character, connection, creativity and contribution through the development of skills such as physical literacy (movement), technical, tactical, mental and physical; delivered by trained coaches in a player-centred environment. This in turn will not only help us retain players but also attract new youngsters to the club and to the game of rugby.

As well as offering sessions to our existing Junior Academy players, Leighton Buzzard RFC will be extending an open invitation for young people in those age-groups (12-16) from Cedars Upper School, The Cottesloe School and Vandyke Upper School to join in.

As well as continuing to forge strong relationships with our local schools, this will support the retention of the existing players and increase the membership and squad numbers by offering the opportunity to local young people aged 12 to 16; with the long-term ambition to have each age-group retained through to Colts (Under 18s) Fifteen a side rugby.

On receiving the news of the grant award Leighton Buzzard RFC Director of Rugby Dave Larham said, “We are absolutely delighted to have been given the opportunity to successfully apply to The Youth Promise Grant Fund to expand the provision we currently provide for our young people. We are looking forward to working with Leighton-Linslade Town Council to achieve the project aims and make a real difference and a lasting legacy for young people in our community.”

In addition to playing activity, Coaching and match officiating qualifications will be available to young people aged 14 years and over. These will be delivered through established and respected courses such as the Quilter Kids First Refereeing Children, World Rugby “Rugby Ready”,  Scrum Factory and Headcase concussion awareness module.

Our dedicated Volunteer Workforce will be provided valuable funded opportunities to undertake Award Courses and Continuous Personal Development (CPD) to build our delivery capacity through courses such as the England Rugby Coaching Award, England Rugby Referee Award, Emergency First Aid in Rugby Union, Quilter Kids First Coaching Under 13s, Quilter Kids First Coaching Under 14s, Play It Safe (Safeguarding), Player Profiling, Game Planning, Principles of Attack, Principles of Defence and Game Changers.

Expected Benefits of the Youth Promise Grant will include:

  • The expansion of the Junior Rugby Academy programme to include 23 weekly mid-week 90-minute high quality rugby coaching session at Leighton Buzzard RFC from 7pm to 8.30pm
  • An opportunity for young people aged 14 years or over to gain coaching and match officiating qualifications
  • Investment in the volunteer workforce by providing access to Rugby Football Union Award Courses and Continuous Personal Development (CPD) in coaching, match officiating, safeguarding and First Aid
  • Provision of new and updated equipment to support delivery
  • Expansion of a Celebration Event to provide an opportunity of celebration and reflection towards the achievements made within the programme through the event. This will enable us to publicly value the contributions made by the funding partner, volunteer workforce and participants. By valuing and acknowledging achievement we believe we can enhance the realistic retention of the participants and the new to programme young people the project has attracted
